Joe will not be getting his favourite thing in the lunchbox today. He doesn't hate Thai fish cakes but they are certainly not his favourite.
He will enjoy the fruit, munch through the veg, love the brown rice noodles and corn and the spicy coconut sauce will be a tick too.
It's just the fishcakes.
Why don't I give him something he'll enjoy more?
Sometimes I do.
But today no. Because I am a firm believer in family meals. And when you do that you can't tick everyone's boxes at all meals. Some will be a smash hit for one person and a ho hum choice for another.
However, far from being mean this teaches us all to accept that some meals are slam dunk winners and others are OK but not our favourites.
We also will find that over time our tastes change. Because it's true they do (wine/beer/coffee).
And only having our favourites at every meal increases selectivity. If you have a hesitant eater this is a doubly important concept. If your child eats something (even if it's obviously not their favourite) don't stop serving it. Over time this limits options more and more.
What do you feed your kids that they are not fond of?
