I was doing a bit of advertising over the weekend and had a meme saying "Stop Picky Eating".
On the post someone wrote an angry response saying "Oh for gods sake stop pandering to the spoilt, attention - seeking little shits. No normal kid will starve to death".
I was very shocked to begin with and I feel that she could have phrased it far more kindly however, I am going to use this as a catalyst for discussion.
1. It's untrue that kids will not starve themselves. There are some children who would get to the point of hospitalisation as food fears trump hunger and survival instincts.
2. Selective eating generally has a cause. I speak to parents daily who tell me their child has been difficult to feed from a very young age. Contributing factors could be ASD, SPD, allergies, reflux/GERD, slow development, tongue/lip ties, enlarged adenoids/tonsils, ADHD or a traumatic event like vomiting or choking to name a few.
3. Most of the parents I work with are not "panderers" they are intuitive and intelligent. And they often have other children who eat just fine.
Having a child or children that eat well is not necessarily a big tick on the parenting card. If your children do eat well that's great and you should appreciate the gift each and every day. The reverse is also true. Bringing up a selective eater is not necessarily a reflection on your parenting.
However, it's also true that your child's eating future does not need to be defined by their issues. The way we intervene and the speed at which we do this can have a huge impact on outcome.
